How much does marketing cost for a painting contractor per month?
A painting contractor spends 7 to 12 percent of revenue on marketing, all in. That is $1,750 to $3,000 a month at $300K in revenue, $3,500 to $6,000 at $600K and $5,800 to $10,000 at $1M.
The number covers three bills: the agency fee, the ad spend and the software. Published 2026 benchmarks put the agency fee at $1,500 to $4,500 a month and Google Ads spend at $2,000 to $10,000 a month for painters under $3M. Below: the dollars at each revenue band, what each bill should be, and what the ad money buys.
What is the monthly number at my revenue?
| Revenue you are building to | Per month, all in | What it covers for a painter |
|---|---|---|
| $300K | $1,750 to $3,000 | Tight for a full agency retainer plus ads. Google Business Profile, Local Services Ads, a referral system and one search campaign you run yourself or with a coach. |
| $600K | $3,500 to $6,000 | A retainer at the low end of the benchmark plus $2,000 to $4,000 in ads. A follow-up system. The start of the AI search work. |
| $1M | $5,800 to $10,000 | Search and Meta both managed, Local Services Ads, cabinets or commercial as a second line, and pages written to be cited by AI search. |
| $2M | $11,700 to $20,000 | Everything above, a second service area, and one person whose whole job is the phone. |
Budget on the revenue you are building to this year, not last year's number. A painter at $300K building to $600K reads the $600K row.
All in means all of it. Fee, ad spend, software, gift cards for referrals. If a quote leaves out the ad spend, you are looking at half the bill.
What are the three bills inside that number?
1. The agency fee. $1,500 to $4,500 a month for a painting company under $3M. $5,000 to $12,000 from $3M to $10M. Those are the 2026 directory benchmarks owners compare proposals against.
2. The ad spend. $2,000 to $10,000 a month in Google Ads under $3M. $15,000 to $40,000 from $3M to $10M. This money goes to Google and Meta, not the agency. It should be on your card, in your account.
3. The software. The CRM, call tracking and the review tool. We do not have a benchmark we trust for this line, so price it from your own invoices and count it.
One more, paid once: the website. Directory benchmarks put a full rebuild at $8,000 to $20,000.
What do the AI engines say it costs?
We put this exact question to four AI engines on October 1, 2026. None named an agency. All four gave a range by business size.
| Engine | Small or solo | Established | Growing or aggressive |
|---|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT | $500 to $1,500 | $1,500 to $3,500 | $3,500 to $7,500 and up |
| Gemini | $150 to $500 | $500 to $1,500 | $1,500 to $3,000 and up |
| Google AI Mode | $300 to $1,000 | $1,500 to $5,000 | $5,000 to $10,000 and up |
| Perplexity | $750 to $1,500 | $1,500 to $4,000 | $4,000 to $10,000, then $10,000 to $25,000 and up |
For an established painter, the four answers ran from $500 to $5,000 a month. A tenfold spread on one question.
Their rule of thumb was 5 to 10 percent of revenue. Gemini said 5 to 12. Home services benchmarks run 6 to 12. We plan on 7 to 12 for a painter who is growing.
One answer per engine, one day. ChatGPT, Gemini and Google AI Mode were logged out. Perplexity was signed in and run from outside the US.
What does the ad money actually buy?
Painting has the highest cost per click of any home service trade on Google search. The numbers to plan with:
| What you are buying | Cost | Source |
|---|---|---|
| One click on Google search | $13.74 | LocaliQ, 3,211 campaigns |
| One lead from Google search | $138 | LocaliQ, median |
| One lead from Google search, 2026 | $157 to $193, by month | 99 Calls, median, its own painting campaigns |
| One lead from Local Services Ads | $20 to $70 | Published 2026 benchmarks |
| One booked interior estimate | $75 to $200 | Directory benchmark |
| One booked exterior estimate | $100 to $250 | Directory benchmark |
| One booked cabinet estimate | $150 to $400 | Directory benchmark |
So $2,000 a month in search ads buys 11 to 14 leads at the benchmark cost. Our tracked cost per lead across painting clients is $40.30. At that cost the same $2,000 buys about 50.
The spend is the same. The lead count is three to four times apart. That gap is what the agency fee is supposed to pay for.
Run it on your own numbers.
Move the sliders. Every result updates as you go. The defaults are a $2,000 fee plus $2,000 in ads, a $4,500 average job and a 25 percent close rate, so change them to yours.

Cost per lead
Share of leads that become jobs. In the accounts we run, painters who quote within 48 hours close 25 to 40 percent.
Example. Use your own.
Covers its cost, but misses the target.
It needs 6 jobs a month to reach 15 percent. At this cost per lead that is about 10 more leads a month, or a lower cost per lead.
At a $400K target, 7 to 12 percent is $2,333 to $4,000 a month. $4,000 is 12.0% of it: inside the 7 to 12 percent band.
Same spend, different cost per lead
Jobs a month from $2,000 in ads at a 25% close rate.
- $138 a lead3.6
- $174 a lead2.9
- $40.30 a lead12.4
The spend is the same. The jobs are not. That gap is what an agency fee is supposed to pay for.
Illustrative. The defaults are examples: a $4,500 average job, a 40 percent margin and a 25 percent close rate. Jobs you would have booked anyway do not count. Benchmarks: acquisition cost of 8 to 15 percent of job revenue, TopMarketingAgencies 2026. $138 a lead, LocaliQ median. $174 a lead, 99 Calls 2026. $40.30 a lead, Growth Recon AI painting clients. 7 to 12 percent of revenue is the planning range this site uses for a growing painter.
When is a full agency too much?
Take the cheapest real version. A $1,500 fee plus $2,000 in ads is $3,500 a month. That is $42,000 a year, which is 12 percent of $350K in revenue.
If $350K or more is the number you are building to this year, a retainer plus ads fits. You do not have to be there yet.
If the plan is to hold steady under $350K, it does not fit. That is not a reason to do nothing. It is a reason to run Local Services Ads and your Google Business Profile yourself, build the referral system, and pay for coaching before you pay for management.
Once it fits, the question changes from "can I afford it" to "does it pay back". The test for that is on the page about whether a $2,000 retainer is worth it.
What does Growth Recon AI charge?

| Search + Care | $999/mo | 3-month minimum, then month to month |
| The Growth Engine | $1,500 build, then $2,500/mo | 3-month minimum, then month to month |
| Done-For-You Premium | $3,500/mo | 3-month minimum, then month to month |

Ad spend is separate, from $1,500 a month, paid by you straight to the platform. You own the ad accounts.
Questions painters ask about marketing cost
How much does marketing cost for a painting contractor per month?
Seven to twelve percent of the revenue you are building to, all in. A painter building to $300K spends $1,750 to $3,000 a month. At $600K it is $3,500 to $6,000. At $1M it is $5,800 to $10,000. That includes the agency fee, the ad spend and the software.
What should a painting company budget for Google Ads?
Published 2026 benchmarks put it at $2,000 to $10,000 a month for painters under $3M. At the benchmark cost of $138 to $174 a lead, $2,000 buys 11 to 14 leads. When we asked four AI engines on October 1, 2026, three said $1,500 to $3,000 a month to start. Local Services Ads cost less per lead, $20 to $70, so set those up first.
What does a painting marketing agency charge per month?
$1,500 to $4,500 a month in fees for a painting company under $3M, and $5,000 to $12,000 from $3M to $10M, on the 2026 directory benchmarks. Ad spend is on top. Growth Recon AI charges $597 to $3,500 a month and publishes every price.
Is $1,000 a month enough to market a painting business?
It is enough for Local Services Ads and a referral system. It is thin for search ads. At $138 to $174 a lead, $1,000 buys 6 to 7 leads a month. Put the first $1,000 into the channels where you pay per lead, not per click.
Should the agency fee count inside the marketing budget?
Yes. Fee, ad spend, software, the review tool, the gift cards. The number to manage is total marketing cost divided by jobs booked. A quote that shows the fee without the ad spend is half the bill.
What does a painting contractor website cost?
Directory benchmarks put a full rebuild at $8,000 to $20,000. Growth Recon AI builds sites for $2,500 to $5,000, and you own the domain, the hosting, the logins and the files.
