Plain-English guide · Updated 6 September 2026

AEO vs GEO vs AI SEO. What it's called, and which one you actually need.

Answer engine optimization (AEO) is the work of getting your business named when someone asks ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini or Google AI Overviews a question you can answer. GEO and AI SEO describe the same job. AEO is the term the market has picked, and it is the one to use.

This page is written for the owner of a painting company, a roofing outfit or a med spa who keeps hearing three different names for one thing. It settles the naming, shows how each engine decides what to cite, and lists what the work involves so you can tell a real proposal from a repackaged SEO retainer.

Free. We run your city through the four engines and send you what they say.

    The names

What is AI SEO called? Four names, one job.

Search volume tells the story. People are searching for the label because the field is new. The label that is growing is AEO. The one that is shrinking is GEO. US monthly Google searches, September 2026.

    AEOAnswer Engine Optimization

The term the market is settling on. 2,400 US searches a month and rising 21% year over year. Used by agencies, by Yext, and by the trade press.

    Use this one.

    GEOGenerative Engine Optimization

The academic label from the 2023 Princeton study. Still the bigger term at 5,400 searches a month, but falling 45% year over year as people converge on AEO.

Same work. Say it once as a synonym.

AI SEOAlso LLM SEO, ChatGPT SEO, AI search optimization

The plain-English version. 14,800 searches a month but down 33%. Most people typing it are asking what the field is called, not buying.

Fine in conversation. Not a category.

AI visibilityThe outcome, not the practice

What owners actually want. Am I named when someone asks ChatGPT for a painter in my town? This is the number to track, whatever you call the work.

    The result you measure.

How is AEO different from SEO?

SEO earns a ranking for a keyword. AEO earns a citation for a question. Both read the same Google and Bing indexes, so the foundations overlap. What changes is the shape of the page and where the proof lives.

The largest public citation study, Yext's analysis of 17.2 million AI citations, found that first-party websites and business listings together account for 86% of what the engines cite. A separate one-million-citation study by Otterly found community platforms like Reddit and Quora supply 52.5% of citations across ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews combined. Your site matters. So does everywhere else you show up.

    The engines

How do ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Google AI Overviews decide what to cite?

Differently. Only about one in ten domains gets cited by both ChatGPT and Perplexity for the same question. That is why "we do AI SEO" from an agency means very little until they tell you which engine they are working on and how.

    ChatGPT

    Reads
Live web search through Bing, plus its own training data.
    Favours
Pages Bing has indexed. Wikipedia and encyclopedic sources for definitions. Business listings and first-party sites for local answers.

If Bing has not crawled you, ChatGPT cannot cite you. Bing Webmaster Tools and IndexNow are step one.

    Perplexity

    Reads
Its own live index with heavy weight on recency.
    Favours
Reddit, Quora, forums and comparison posts. The most source-transparent engine, and the one that cites community pages the most.

Answers in the places your customers already ask count as much as your own site.

    Gemini and Google AI Overviews

    Reads
The Google index, Google Business Profile data and structured data.
    Favours
Schema-rich pages, question-shaped headings, recently updated content. Google AI Overviews now appear on roughly a quarter of queries.

FAQ schema, LocalBusiness or Service schema, and a visible updated date are not optional.

    The work

What does AEO actually involve for a local business?

Eight things. If a proposal does not cover most of them, it is an SEO retainer with a new name on the invoice.

    01

    Answer-first pages

Every page opens with the direct answer in under 60 words, with a real number in it. Engines lift the first clean answer they find.

    02

    Question headings

Headings are the questions a buyer would type. Not clever, not branded. "How much does exterior painting cost in Austin?" is a heading. "Our Process" is not.

    03

    Structured data

Organization, Service or LocalBusiness, FAQPage and Article schema on the pages that deserve them. This is how Gemini and AI Overviews read the page without guessing.

    04

    One citable claim per section

A statistic with a source, or your own tracked number. The Princeton study measured a 41% citation lift from credible quotations and 32% from original statistics.

    05

    Entity consistency

Same business name, description and URL on every listing the engines read: Bing Places, Yelp, industry directories, LinkedIn. Three half-matches read as three businesses.

    06

    Presence where the engines look

Useful answers on Reddit and the trade forums. Placement on the comparison and roundup pages the engines already cite. Reviews flowing on the platforms they trust.

    07

    Freshness

Content updated within 30 days is cited 3.2 times more often than older content. A dated page on a refresh rota beats a perfect page from last year.

    08

    Measurement

A fixed set of buyer prompts, run weekly across the four engines, logged. If you are not counting citations you are not doing AEO, you are hoping.

    Which one do you need?

You run a painting company, a roofing business, a med spa or another local service.

You need AEO, and specifically local AEO. Your buyer asks "who is the best painter near me with good reviews" and the engine names two or three businesses. The whole job is being one of them. Start with the free AI visibility audit to see whether you are named today. If the site is the problem, the Website build fixes it in 21 days. If the site is fine and the citations are missing, the monthly AEO and GEO work is the fight.

You run a software company, a national brand or an online store.

You are in GEO territory and there are agencies built for it. Minuttia, NoGood and Petra Labs are the names that come up. That is not our market and we will say so on the call.

    Measurement

How do you know AEO is working?

Write down the 20 questions a buyer in your town would actually type. Run them every week in ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Google AI mode. Log whether you are named and which sources the engine cites. Then watch three numbers: citations across those 20 prompts, sessions in Google Analytics where the referrer is chatgpt.com or perplexity.ai, and leads that started from an AI referral.

That log is the whole measurement system. It costs a spreadsheet and an hour a week. If an agency cannot show you theirs, they are not measuring.

    FAQ

    Questions owners ask about AEO

What is answer engine optimization in one sentence?

Answer engine optimization is the work of structuring your website and your presence across the web so that ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Google AI Overviews name your business when someone asks them a question you can answer.

Is AEO the same as GEO?

In practice, yes. GEO came from a 2023 academic paper and describes the same job of getting cited by generative engines. The market has moved to AEO because it describes the outcome an owner wants: being the answer. We use AEO and treat GEO as a synonym.

Do I still need SEO if I do AEO?

Yes, and the two share most of their foundations. The engines still read the Google and Bing indexes. What changes is the shape of the page. Traditional SEO chases a ranking for a keyword. AEO chases a citation for a question. A page can do both when it is built for it.

How long does AEO take to show results?

First citation movement usually shows within 30 to 60 days once the technical foundations are in place. A durable presence in your category takes three to six months. AI engines update slower than Google search, but citations stick longer once they land.

Can a small local business actually get cited by ChatGPT?

Yes. Citation is not a function of brand size or Google rank. A practitioner test in 2026 asked ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity for the best home-services marketing agency and got 15 different brands, several of which did not rank on page one of Google. What they had was clean, indexed, answer-shaped pages and third-party mentions.

    What does AEO cost?

Growth Recon AI publishes price. The website build is a one-time build at $2,500 to $5,000 depending on the size of the site. Search + Care is $999 a month, with a 3-month minimum, then month to month. The free AI visibility audit costs nothing and tells you whether you need either.
