AEO for painters · Updated 6 September 2026

AEO for painting contractors. Get recommended by ChatGPT, Gemini and Google AI.

When a homeowner asks an AI engine for a painter, it reads a handful of sources and names two or three companies. Getting your painting business into that answer takes six things: a site Bing has indexed, service pages that open with the answer, structured data, one consistent business entity, reviews that keep arriving, and mentions on the pages the engines already trust. This page walks through all six.

Free. We run the buying questions for your city through the four engines and send you the screenshots.

    The questions

What does a homeowner ask AI when they want a painter?

Not "painter near me". That was Google. In an AI engine people type the whole question, with the city, the constraint and the fear in it. These are the shapes we see in every market we audit.

    • >Who is the best exterior painter in Round Rock with good reviews?
    • >How much does it cost to paint a 2,400 square foot house in Phoenix?
    • >Recommend a cabinet refinishing company near Franklin, Tennessee.
    • >Which painters in Boise offer financing?
    • >Is it worth hiring a painter or should I do it myself?
    • >Find me a painter in Sarasota who can start this month.

Forty-five percent of consumers used an AI tool to find a local business in the past year, up from six percent the year before. Google AI Overviews now appear on roughly one in four searches. The homeowner asking these questions is already your customer. The only question is whose name comes back.

    The gap

Why doesn't AI name your painting company today?

In the audits we run, a painting company that is missing from AI answers is missing for one of five reasons. Usually three of them at once.

    01

Bing has never crawled your site

ChatGPT searches the web through Bing. Most painting sites are verified in Google Search Console and nowhere else. If Bing does not have you, ChatGPT cannot cite you, no matter how good the site is.

    02

Your pages do not answer anything

"Quality painting since 2009" is a slogan, not an answer. The engines lift the first clean answer they find to the question that was asked. A service page with no price range, no timeline and no city is invisible to that process.

    03

You are three different businesses online

Smith Painting on Google, Smith Painting LLC on Yelp, Smith's Painting on Facebook, with two phone numbers between them. AI engines treat that as three weak entities instead of one strong one.

    04

    Nobody mentions you anywhere else

Over half of AI citations come from third-party pages: Reddit threads, local roundups, Nextdoor, review platforms. A painter with a great site and zero mentions loses to a painter with an average site and a dozen.

    05

    Your reviews stopped in 2024

Recency matters more than volume. An engine asked for a painter "with good reviews" reads the dates. Four to five new Google reviews a month is the floor for a company that wants to be named.

    The fix

What gets a painter named in an AI answer?

Six signals. The largest citation study to date, 17.2 million AI citations, found first-party websites and business listings make up 86% of what the engines cite. A separate one-million-citation study found community and roundup pages supply more than half. The list below covers both halves.

A service page for every service, in every city you work

Interior, exterior, cabinets, commercial. Each one opens with the answer a homeowner needs: what it costs in that city, how long it takes, what is included. Question headings underneath.

Structured data the engines can read

LocalBusiness or HomeAndConstructionBusiness schema with your service area. Service schema per page. FAQPage schema on every question block. This is how Gemini and Google AI Overviews read a painting site without guessing.

    One entity, everywhere

Same name, address, phone, description and URL on Google, Bing Places, Yelp, Angi, Houzz, Nextdoor, Facebook and the paint-store contractor directories. Boring, decisive.

    Reviews that keep arriving

A review request in the follow-up sequence after every completed job. Replies to every review. Reviews on Google first, then wherever your city's homeowners actually look.

    Mentions where the engines look

Useful answers in the local subreddit and Nextdoor. A spot on the local "best painters in" roundups. A paint-store or realtor partner page that names you. Perplexity in particular cites these more than it cites you.

    A weekly prompt log

Twenty buying questions for your city, run weekly in ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Google AI mode, with screenshots. It is the only way to know it is working, and it costs an hour.

How is this different from local SEO and Google Maps?

Local SEO gets you into the map pack. AEO gets you into the answer. They overlap, and they are not the same fight. Google Local Services Ads now show only two painters at the top of the page and demote you for missed calls. The map pack shows three. An AI answer names two or three, but it builds that list from your site, Bing, Yelp, Reddit and the local roundups as well as from Google. A painter can sit third on Maps and be absent from every AI answer in town. We see it every week.

The practical difference: Maps rewards proximity, categories and review count. AI engines reward pages that answer the exact question, a business that looks like one entity everywhere, and being talked about by someone other than yourself. Check it yourself

How do I check whether AI recommends my painting company?

Open ChatGPT and type "best exterior painter in [your city] with good reviews". Then the same in Perplexity, Gemini and Google with AI mode on. Note who is named and which pages each engine cites. Do it for five more questions your customers would ask. If your company is missing from most of them, you now know what the job is. If you would rather we did it and sent you the screenshots, that is the free audit.

    FAQ

Questions painters ask about AI search

What is AEO for painting contractors?

Answer engine optimization for painters is the work of getting your painting company named when a homeowner asks ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini or Google AI Overviews who to hire. It covers answer-first service pages, structured data, a consistent business entity across listings, reviews that keep arriving, mentions on the third-party pages the engines cite, and a weekly log of what the engines actually say.

Do homeowners really use ChatGPT to find a painter?

Yes, and the number is moving fast. Forty-five percent of consumers used AI tools such as ChatGPT, Gemini or Perplexity to find a local business in the past year, up from six percent the year before. Google AI Overviews now appear on roughly a quarter of searches, including "painters near me" style queries in many cities.

Is AEO the same as local SEO or Google Maps ranking?

No. Local SEO gets you into the Google map pack. AEO gets you into the answer. The engines read your Google Business Profile, but they also read your site, Bing, Yelp, Reddit and the roundup pages. A painter can rank third on Maps and be absent from every AI answer in town, and the reverse also happens.

How much does AEO cost for a painting company?

Growth Recon AI publishes price. The website build is a one-time build at $2,500 to $5,000 depending on the size of the site. Search + Care is $999 a month, with a 3-month minimum, then month to month. The free AI visibility audit costs nothing and tells you whether you need either.

How long until my painting company shows up in AI answers?

First citation movement usually shows in 30 to 60 days once Bing indexing, schema and answer-first pages are in place. A durable presence for your city takes three to six months. Citations tend to stick once they land.

Can I do AEO for my painting business myself?

Yes. Verify the site in Bing Webmaster Tools, rewrite each service page to open with the answer, add FAQ schema, fix your listings so they match, ask every customer for a review, and answer questions in the local subreddit. Then run 20 prompts a week and log them. It is real work, about a day a week for three months. If you would rather be painting, that is what we are for.
