How to get your business on ChatGPT. There is no listing. Here is what works.

You cannot claim a ChatGPT profile the way you claimed your Google Business Profile. ChatGPT builds its answer fresh every time from a Bing web search and the pages it trusts. To be the business it names, your site has to be in Bing, your pages have to answer the question the homeowner asked, your listings have to match, your reviews have to be recent, and someone other than you has to mention you. Seven steps, below.

Free. We ask ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Google AI for a business like yours in your city and send you the screenshots.

Is there a ChatGPT business listing I can claim?

No. There is no ChatGPT directory, no verification postcard and no dashboard. Anyone selling you a "ChatGPT listing" is selling you something else with a new name on it.

What exists instead is the set of places ChatGPT reads when it goes looking. Your Bing Places profile. Your Google Business Profile, through the pages that quote it. Your website, if Bing has crawled it. Yelp, Angi, Houzz and Nextdoor. The local the local best-of roundups. Reddit. Those are the listing. The work is making all of them say the same thing about you and making your site the best answer in the pile.

    Under the hood

How does ChatGPT decide which business to recommend?

A customer types "best exterior painter in Tulsa with good reviews", or the same question for any trade. ChatGPT turns that into two or three Bing searches, reads the top handful of results, and writes an answer naming the businesses those pages agree on, usually with a line about why. It shows its sources. That whole process takes about four seconds and it happens again from scratch for the next person.

    What it weighs

Pages that answer the exact question. Listings that match each other. Recent reviews. Third-party pages that mention you. Whether Bing has your site at all.

    What it ignores

Your Google Ads. Your Google ranking, directly. Your Instagram. How long you have been in business, unless a page says so. Anything Bing has not indexed.

The largest public study of AI citations, 17.2 million of them, found that first-party websites and business listings together make up 86% of what the engines cite. A second study of one million citations found more than half come from community and roundup pages. Both are true. ChatGPT reads your site and it reads what everyone else says about you.

    The seven steps

What gets a local business named in ChatGPT?

In order. The first one is the one almost every local business has skipped.

    1. 1

      Get your site into Bing

      30 minutes

ChatGPT searches the web through Bing, not Google. Go to Bing Webmaster Tools, choose "Import from Google Search Console", and submit your sitemap. Then claim your listing on Bing Places. Most local businesses skip this and it is the single biggest reason they are missing.

    2. 2

Make every service page answer a question

      1 to 2 days

Open each page with the answer a customer wants: what the service costs in your city, how long it takes, what is included, when you can start. Put the question in the heading. "How much does it cost to paint a house in Tulsa?" gets lifted. "Our Services" does not.

    3. 3

Make your business one entity everywhere

      Half a day

Same name, address, phone, description and website on Google, Bing Places, Yelp, Angi, Houzz, Nextdoor, Facebook and the Sherwin-Williams or Benjamin Moore contractor directories. ChatGPT cross-checks. Three versions of you read as three weak businesses.

    4. 4

      Add structured data

Half a day, or built in

LocalBusiness schema with your service area on the homepage. Service schema on each service page. FAQPage schema on every question block. This is the machine-readable version of your site and it is what Gemini and Google AI read first.

    5. 5

      Keep reviews arriving

      Ongoing, automated

Put a review request in the text that goes out after every completed job. Reply to every review. When a customer asks for someone "with good reviews", the engine reads the dates. Four to five new Google reviews a month is the floor.

    6. 6

Get mentioned by someone who is not you

      An hour a week

Answer questions in your city's subreddit and on Nextdoor. Get onto the local best-of roundups for your trade. Ask a realtor or paint-store partner to list you. More than half of AI citations come from third-party pages, and ChatGPT weighs them heavily.

    7. 7

Ask it every week and write down the answer

      An hour a week

Twenty questions a homeowner in your city would type, run weekly in ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Google AI mode, with screenshots. It is the only way to know whether any of this is working, and it is how you catch a competitor moving in.

What about Gemini, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews?

The same seven steps get you most of the way in all four, because they all read the same web. What differs is the weighting. Gemini and Google AI Overviews read Google's index, your Google Business Profile and your structured data, so steps 2, 4 and 5 matter most. Perplexity cites Reddit, forums and recent content more than any other engine, so step 6 does the heavy lifting. ChatGPT is the one that needs Bing.

Only about one domain in ten gets cited by both ChatGPT and Perplexity for the same question. Do all seven and you stop depending on any one of them. The full breakdown by engine is on the AEO guide, and the painting-specific version is on AEO for painting contractors.

    Time

How long does it take to show up in ChatGPT?

Steps 1 to 4 take about a week of focused work. Bing usually indexes within days once the sitemap is in. First movement in the answers shows in 30 to 60 days. Being reliably named for your city takes three to six months, and then it tends to hold. The weekly log is how you see it move.

    Money

Can I pay ChatGPT to recommend my business?

Not for the recommendation itself. OpenAI is testing ads inside ChatGPT and Bing Ads may reach it through Microsoft, but the organic answer cannot be bought. If you want it done for you, Growth Recon AI charges $2,500 to $5,000 for a site built to be cited and $999 a month for the ongoing work, with a 3-month minimum, then month to month. Price is on the page, and the audit is free.

    FAQ

    Questions owners ask about ChatGPT

Is there a ChatGPT business listing I can claim?

No. There is no ChatGPT directory, no profile to verify and no listing to claim. ChatGPT builds its answer each time from a live Bing web search plus what it already knows. The closest things to a listing are your Bing Places profile, your Google Business Profile, and your own website indexed in Bing. Fix those three and you have done the part that behaves like a listing.

How does ChatGPT decide which business to recommend?

When someone asks for a local business, ChatGPT runs a web search through Bing, reads a handful of the top results, and names the businesses those pages agree on. It favours pages that answer the exact question, business listings that match each other, recent reviews, and third-party pages such as roundups and Reddit threads that mention you. It does not read your Google Ads and it does not care about your Google ranking directly.

Can I pay ChatGPT to recommend my business?

Not for the organic answer. OpenAI has started testing ads in ChatGPT, and Bing Ads may eventually surface there because Microsoft owns the search layer, but the recommendation itself cannot be bought. Every step on this page is free apart from your time, or ours if you would rather not spend yours.

How long does it take to show up in ChatGPT?

Once Bing has indexed the site and the pages answer real questions, first movement usually shows within 30 to 60 days. Being reliably named for your city takes three to six months. Citations tend to stick once they land, which is the good news.

Does the same work get me into Gemini, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews?

Mostly. Gemini and Google AI Overviews read the Google index and structured data, so schema and question headings matter most there. Perplexity leans on Reddit, forums and recent content. ChatGPT leans on Bing and business listings. The seven steps cover all four. What differs is which step each engine weighs most.

Does my Google Business Profile matter for ChatGPT?

Yes, indirectly. ChatGPT reads pages that reference your Google reviews and rating, and Gemini and Google AI Overviews read the profile directly. Keep it complete and keep reviews arriving. But a profile alone will not get you named. It is one of the seven, not a substitute for the rest.
